TROOPER INTERROGATION REPORT SUBJECT 0680 - JOHN ORNDORFF
1) Tell us a little about yourself: your work, your hobbies, and your background.
I am a 39 year-old kid at heart. I am a police officer in the Colorado Springs area, (not for the Colorado Springs PD). I enjoy computer games (mostly Star Wars
camping, fishing, and traveling. I started in the Legion in September 2000 and quickly became a squad leader then the Commander of the Mountain Garrison.
2) When did you first get your costume and what drove you to it?
I had been searching for a Stormtrooper costume for several years before I finally found one on Ebay. I contacted one seller that was listed in my home town and bought it right away.
What drove me to it? The first scene that the Stormtroopers appear in impressed me so much; I just had to find a Stormtrooper costume. I searched and searched until I finally found the one I have now.
3) What is it about the character (of your costume) that inspires you to go through the rigors of portraying them?
I guess it is the awe that the Stormtrooper costume inspires. Every time I put on the costume the kids and adults alike are so impressed that it gives me such a joy that I know it is worth the pinches and bruises.
4) How long have you been in costuming? What kind of experience do you have in the hobby?
In the nearly four years I have been in the Legion I have gained quite a bit of experience in costuming. Before that I had none. I now can make other costumes, but I MUCH prefer the Stormtrooper to the others.
5) What's your favorite memory of appearing in your costume?
My favorite memory I would have to say is the first time I appeared in costume at the Candlelighters Christmas Party. The Candlelighters are a support group for kids with cancer and blood disorders. The cancer kids and their family and friends were so impressed that they invited us back and we are still supporting them. I just have a soft spot in my heart for those kids. It saddens me when I hear one of them has died.
6) What's the strangest thing to ever happen to you while out costuming?
Not sure about this one.
7) If you could pick any stormtrooper from the Star Wars movies for you to be, which one would it be and why? (specify the movie, scene, and some description of the action)
I would have to say one of the Stormtroopers from ANH in the Death Star above Luke and Leia just before they crossed the chasm. The shot of them above the fleeing Rebels is an awesome shot and I have that picture as my computer desktop. The Troopers in that shot are "Impressive, most impressive." HEHEHEHEHE!
8) If the 501st created a tips manual on trooping, what tip would you add?
The 2 tips I think are the most important would be 1) go to the bathroom before putting the plastic on and 2) remain professional when in costume.
9) How has the 501st influenced your love of costuming and of the Star Wars universe?
Since I have been with the 501st, I have met so many good people. Both in the Legion and from the Star Wars universe. The people I have met are all AWESOME. Without these people I don't think I would have stayed with the 501st.
10) If you were contacted by Lucasfilm and asked to appear in a Star Wars movie, what line would you want your character to deliver?
I would have to say it would be "There's one! Set for stun!" or "Blast them!"
11) What's the number one question/comment you hear from fans when you're in your costume?
I bet it's hot in there or are those costumes expensive?
12) What's your favorite part of working with the 501st Legion Fan Club?
The MOST favorite part for me is the charity work, first and foremost. Then after that would have to be when R.A. Salvatore personally signed a couple books for me and I don't think he would have done that if I had not been with the 501st.
13) If the 501st assigned 'handles' or 'nicknames' to its members, what would yours be?
Not sure about this one either.
14) In your experience costuming, which Star Wars personality has impressed you most in relating to her/his fans?
William Hootkins as Jek Porkins. I met him at AlphaCon. He would talk with the regular fans, but when a 501st member went by his table he would not only talk with us but was joking around with us/me and talked about the Stormtrooper costumes in the movies. That still impresses me to this day.
15) Which Star Wars character would you want thrown into a detention cell more than any other?
Jar Jar Binks, enough said?
