What Characters Qualify for 501st Membership

Is Darth Krayt acceptable for 501st membership? What about Captain Rex? Do you accept General Grievous?

These are some of the most frequent questions we get. To help make things clearer, we've put together this character approval statement. This page will describe for you what criteria we use to determine whether or not a character is approvable. As always, if you have any questions, please contact your local GML.

How are Costumes Reviewed for Membership?

When you are ready to join (or get a new costume approved), you will submit your pictures to your GML. At that point, it will follow one of the paths below.

Established character with a Visual Guide entry

If a Visual Guide exists for the costume being reviewed, the GML will compare the project against that guide and either approve the costume or defer it if revisions are required. If your GML has any questions or concerns, he/she can bring the costume to the Costume Advisory team for assistance.

Established character without a Visual Guide entry

In the absence of a Visual Guide, your GML will compare your costume against available visual reference. You may be asked to provide the reference materials you used when creating the costume. If your GML has any questions or concerns, he/she can bring the costume to the Costume Advisory team for assistance.

New to the Legion Character

New to the Legion is any character that meets the requirements in the character approval statement but either:

  • Has a Visual Guide and less than 2 approved costumes in the Legion.
  • Has no Visual Guide and less than 4 approved costumes in the Legion.

All new to the Legion characters are reviewed by the LMO/Costume Advisory team. The decision is relayed back to your GML.

Commercially Available Costumes

Some commercially available Star Wars costumes and accessories may not be acceptable for 501st membership. It is recommended that you visit the Legion Detachment that covers the costume of your interest before making a purchase.

Costuming Reference Library

Members of the 501st have been working to assemble a catalog of visual reference guides for the various costumes in the Legion. Each of these guides represents the collected experience of our members and many hours of effort. In each guide you will find images of each part of the costume, a description of the part, and notes on 501st requirements for it.
