Novatrooper Sentinels are an elite Special Ops unit, operating in limited number Novatrooper corp squads. Fulfilling unique roles on the battlefield, the Sentinels are often utilized to temporarily secure perimeters, immediately following sieges, in preparation for permanent occupation.


Black text indicates a feature that is required for approval. Blue text denotes features that are nice to have, but not required. Red text indicates features that take the prop/costume item to an even higher level of accuracy.

For 501st membership only the requirements listed in black need to be met.

Special Notes:

  • The armor parts shall be gloss black and made from one of these types of materials or like materials: Fiberglass, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), or HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene).
  • Blasters are not required for legion membership per our weapons policy.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
  • Any uncertainties or questionable aspects of the submitted costume should be brought to the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the legion forum.
Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

TX Novatrooper Sentinel Helmet.jpg Helmet
For 501st approval:
  • Lenses are sufficiently dark to obscure the costumer's eyes.
    • Lenses may be flat or bubbled.
    • Acceptable colors are black, smoke, or dark green.
  • The "ear" bars have three or four bumps and may be the same color as the body or painted flat black.
  • The frown has either (6) or (8) teeth removed.
    • If there are spaces between the teeth, the wearer's face is not seen.
  • The tube stripes are black in color and may number between (9) and (15) per side.
    • There does not need to be the same number per side.
    • Stripes curve backwards and may be hand painted or decals.
  • The aerators (cylinders on either side of the vocoder) are black.
    • Cover screens may be silver or black.
  • Traps (trapezoids on dome of helmet) and tears (area beneath the corners of eye lenses) are solid black.
  • Helmet flash is a silver stripe that runs horizontally along the brow with thicker sections cut at a right angle near the temple traps.
  • Another horizontal silver stripe runs between the rear dome traps and is between half and three quarters the height of the traps.
  • Silver bars are present under the tube stripes, on each side.
    • Note: The FX helmet is considered deprecated (to be avoided), though is acceptable for Legion requirements.
    • Note: A stock (out of the box) MRCE and/or EFX PCR helmet does not meet the basic 501st requirements without the major modification that are necessary.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Ears have three screws per side.
    • One above and one below the ear bar, and one at the base of the helmet.
  • Ear bars have four bumps only.
    • Not three.
  • Correct 'Hovi mic' aerator tips.
  • FX helmets are not allowed.

  • Black with horizontal ribs, fitted to the wearer, and extending from the base of the neck to the top of the Adam's apple.

For 501st approval:
  • Black non-textured material, either one-piece or two-piece construction with no visible zippers or logos.

For 501st approval:
  • Shoulder straps are securely mounted in front and may free float in back.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • No visible rivets.
  • Shoulder straps terminate at the back with ribbing.
    • The rear tabs are removed.

For 501st approval:
  • Shoulders have a silver vertical stripe running down the center of the outside. *The shoulder are considered effectively symmetrical.
    • May be worn interchangeably on the left and right shoulders.

  • Armor is fully closed with a silver vertical stripe running down the center of the outside.

TX Novatrooper Sentinel HandGuards.jpg Hand Plates
For 501st approval:
  • Hand Plates are roughly pentagonal in shape.
  • The Hand Plates are painted silver.
  • Armor is mounted securely over the back of the glove.
    • As an alternative to plastic, these may be made out of latex or latex-like material.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Hand Plates are made of latex or latex-like material.
  • Hand Plates are affixed to rubber gloves in lieu of plastic hand guards.

  • Black Gloves.
  • Gloves are made of non-textured rubber, nomex, leather, or leather-like material.
  • The fingers are enclosed.
  • Gloved have no visible straps, logos or designs.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Gloves are made of black rubber or latex.

For 501st approval:
  • Chest Armor overlaps the Abdomen Armor.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • A black flexible U shaped gasket or molded lip is present around all edges.

  • Back Armor has little or no overlap of the Kidney Armor.
  • Back Armor contains a "O II" design.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • A black flexible U shaped gasket or molded lip shall be present around all edges.

For 501st approval:
  • The Abdomen Armor has a button area with (9) gloss black buttons of approximately 7/16" in diameter.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • A black flexible U shaped gasket or molded lip shall be present around all edges.

For 501st approval:
  • A single piece (connected) Kidney/Posterior armor is acceptable.
    • If a separate kidney piece is used, it lines up with the Abdomen Armor, with the top of the kidney plate being flush to or under the Back Armor.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • A black flexible U shaped gasket or molded lip shall be present around all edges.

For 501st approval:
  • A single piece (connected) Kidney/Posterior armor is acceptable.
    • If a separate Posterior piece is used, it lines up below the bottom of the belt, with the Abdomen Armor with minimal gap between it and the Kidney Armor.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • A black flexible U shaped gasket or molded lip shall be present around all edges.

For 501st approval:
  • Belt face is made of plastic (ammo belt).
  • Belt is comprised of (6) rectangular boxes, with three square buttons.
    • One centered in the middle and one on each end.
  • Belt proper may be made from glossy black ABS or a similar shiny material.
    • Black canvas or similar heavy material may also be used.
  • Belt is 3 to 3.5" wide.
  • The drop boxes hang from the sides of the plastic belt face via black straps and are aligned under the plastic tabs of the ammo belt.

For 501st approval:
  • The Detonator (a.k.a. O2 canister) attaches to the back of the belt.
  • This is an all black cylinder, 2 to 2.5" in diameter, with black end caps and a black control panel pad.
    • Controls are closest to the right end cap.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • No detonator is present.

For 501st approval:
  • Thigh Armor may open and firmly close in the back, allowing the two halves to appear sealed when viewed.
  • A ammo belt is installed on the bottom of the right thigh.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • The thigh ammo belt is connected by brads/split rivets.
    • Standard rivets are incorrect.
  • The bottom corners of the thigh ammo belt are rounded.

For 501st approval:
  • The Lower Leg Armor is able to open and firmly close in the back allowing the two halves to appear sealed.
  • A trapezoid knee plate is affixed to the top of the left lower leg.
  • The knee plate center hexagon, upper ridge, and top trim are painted silver.

For 501st approval:
  • Black leather or leather-like, above ankle height, with a flat sole, and small U-shaped elastic sections on both sides of the ankle with no buckles or laces. Jodphur-type boots or an equivalent style. All stitching must be black, and unnecessary or decorative stitching must not be present. Elvis / Mariachi boots are not acceptable.
  • White, or other color boots may be painted black so long as the boots are maintained to remain the proper color.

For 501st approval:
  • Holster is made of black leather or leather-like material.
  • Holster is worn on the left.
  • Holster may be attached to the belt from behind with rivets or with loops covering the outside of the belt.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • No holster is present.
Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below.

For 501st approval:
  • Pauldron is orange in color and made from vinyl or leather.
  • Pauldron is worn over the right shoulder.

For 501st approval:

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the E-11 is standard-issue for many Imperial troops. Light, compact yet powerful, the E-11 blaster is always in high demand throughout the galaxy.

  • Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Folding stock.
    • Stock does not need to function.
  • A real or replica ammo counter - based off of a Hengstler counter - should be present.
  • D-ring mounted on the rear.
  • Correct style scope.
  • Two power cylinders on the magazine.
  • Scratch-built, resin cast, Hyperfirm rubber cast blasters should have a total of 6 t-racks on blaster (leaving the lowest row on the Hengstler side un-covered).
  • Popular commercially available toy Stormtrooper blasters have a total of 7 T-racks (if you cover all the rows of holes) or 6 T-racks (if you cover the "open row" of holes on the Hengstler side.
  • Below this, you must grind off the lower T-rack and drill a new row of holes).
