The sandtrooper is a desert terrain stormtrooper equipped with modified armor and gear to better withstand missions in harsh arid environments. While their armor is superficially similar to that of the standard stormtrooper, advanced cooling systems in both their helmets and suits offer these troopers protection from the relentless heat.


The 501st approval requirements are listed in black.

MEPD Defines two additional, optional levels of costuming excellence: Police Officer and SWAT. In the page below, requirements for Police Officer are listed in blue. SWAT requirements are in red. Please visit the MEPD web site for a full description of these standards.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components must be present and appear as described below for approval .

  • Left side ab plate has a minimum of three and maximum of four buttons painted white.
  • Right side ab plate is blank square and does not contain buttons like stormtrooper.

  • Left side ab plate has 3 buttons.
  • Armor side gaps should be closed or nearly closed; no more than 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) gap on either side.
    • This should be done by adding a shim or shims of material that must be of similar material and color as the ab and back plate.
    • Shims should fit flush and may have seams, though ideally they will be seamless to the ab and/or back plate, resulting in a single seam between the ab/back rather than extra seams for where the shims are joined.

  • Rivets on the left side of the ab/kidney plates: a total of six rivets with three on the ab and three on the kidney plate, equally spaced out along the depth of the armor and about 10mm from the edge.
  • One snap on the top right hand side oft he ab plate: back of male side of snap should show on outside of ab plate.
  • Visible fasteners under crotch area. One split rivet or brad in the front. (not required to be functional)

  • Correct style scope.
  • Two power cylinders on the magazine housing.
  • Scratch-built, resin cast, Hyperfirm rubber cast blasters shall have a total of 6 T-tracks on blaster (leaving the lowest row on the Hengstler counter side uncovered).
  • Popular commercially available toy Stormtrooper blasters have a total of 7 T-tracks (if you cover all the rows of holes) or 6 T-tracks (if you cover the "open row" of holes on the Hengstler counter side. Below this, you shall grind off the lower T-track and drill a new row of holes).
