Context: Star Wars: Republic Commando Game and Novels
Republic Commandos are uniquely trained to work in groups as one. Boss serves as a Sergeant in Delta Squad. He rarely talks, except to give orders.


The 501st approval requirements are listed in black.

In the page below, items listed in blue are recommended features that will improve the quality of the costume. Items listed in red are intended to further enhance the finished costume.

For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

IMPORTANT: The "Animated" armor design, seen in The Clone Wars CG Series, differs from the "Realistic" armor design used to create characters from the theatrical films and graphic novels.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
  • Any uncertainties or questionable aspects of the submitted costume should be brought to the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the legion forum.
Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando helmet matching armor color.
  • Helmet is painted with a base of matte white.
  • Orange painted flashing and details.
  • Blue Mirrored helmet lens.
  • Blue illumination lighting is installed along the upper edge of lens and concealed behind helmet edge.
    • Preferably with the use of EL Wire, but LED and Acrylic Rod is also acceptable.
    • A black lens may also be used so long as a blue illuminated glow reflects from lens lighting.
  • Black painted mouth frown.
  • Two front Aerators, painted black or dark gray
  • Chin communication greeblie detail piece, painted black or dark gray.
  • Spotlight holder with LED bulb located on right ear circle of helmet.
  • Side vents under ear column are painted to match helmet with backing material painted black.
    • Backing material may be cut out for ventilation, but should be covered with black mesh screen.
  • Black band across back of helmet above the grey band.
  • Grey band across back of helmet below the black band.
  • Grey ventilation louvers run vertically down the center of helmet back. **Backing material may be cut out, but must be covered with black mesh screen.
  • Helmet is weathered and includes various blaster and/or scratch marks.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Orange colored details.
    • Orange stripe starting from chin widens on the front of the helmet in a “V” pattern and connects to back helmet at the upside down “U” flat plate.
    • Orange stripes run down back of helmet along both sides of the back ventilation louvers to base of helmet.
    • Back helmet upside down “U” shaped flat plate has two 1 inch orange squares aligned horizontally above each leg of the “U” shape.
    • Detail groove lines are painted black or other dark weathering color like gray or brown to bring out groove lines.

For 501st approval:
  • Neck Seal is made of black vinyl or leather type material.
  • 4-5 horizontal neck ribs that may range in size from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick.
  • 'Bib covers the entire area within the neckline of the chest/back armor, and includes trapezoidal detail shapes.
    • Shapes can be created with or without 3-dimensional features.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Bib cover shapes are 3-dimensional and include 6 front elongated trapezoids and 3 raised shoulder trapezoids.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Chest Armor.
  • Armor piece has a “V” shape front with elevated chest area.
  • Chest is matte white base color with orange painted flashing and details.
  • Chest and back plate should match together at the sides with no open gap, just a seam line.
  • Four orange circles are located on left chest detail aligned horizontally to match chest edge.
    • Circles may range in size from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch diameter.
  • Orange covers the upper Chest from the left shoulder strap and running diagonally across the Chest to the right side where it arcs to connect to the Back armor.
  • Chest armor is weathered and has blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Back Armor.
  • Back has a matte white base color with orange painted flashing and details.
  • Armor is flat on back and lines up with Backpack.
  • Back detail is ok, but must have exterior edge that lines up with Backpack.
  • Chest and back plate match together at the sides with no gap, just a seam line.
  • Orange covers the upper Back. The top half of the back plate is orange with the left edge angling up to the left arm hole. The right edge angles down to connect with the right side arc that connects to Chest. Orange should also match to Backpack orange.
  • Back is weathered and has blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Backpack.
  • Backpack is matte white base color with orange painted flashing and details.
  • Orange covers the top of the backpack box frame and angles match downward to the Back armor.
  • A 2-digit illuminated translucent ID number (38) with upper graphic detail and two handles is mounted on the bottom.
  • ID number frame and extruding circle detail are gray.
  • Backpack attaches to Back armor without visible hardware.
  • Backpack may be removable, but must have a finished look matching the Back armor.
  • Backpack construction shall have no visible seams.
  • Backpack is weathered and has blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando shoulder bells.
  • Shoulder bells are matte white base color with orange painted flashing and details.
  • Shoulders are rounded on neck and bicep ends with raised center and imbedded buckle detail.
  • Squad Leader shield cover over right shoulder bell with protruding handle along neck side, and four indented stripes that run from handle to outside edge.
    • Shield cover is orange.
  • Recessed rectangle areas and imbedded buckle detail are grey.
  • Bells and Shield are weathered and have blaster and/or scratch marks.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Right shoulder shield covering has a white handle and indented stripes are black or dark gray.
  • Orange detail on shoulders forms an angled “U” shape pattern along the neck side edge of the shoulder armor.
  • Right shoulder is done the same although it is mostly hidden under shield cover.
  • Groove lines are darkened with black, dark grey or weathering.

  • Katarn-Class Commando Biceps are painted orange.
  • Biceps are seamless.
  • Biceps are weathered and have blaster and/or scratch marks.

  • Side shield indented emblems are black.

  • Katarn-Class Commando Elbows.

Elbows are painted with a matte white base color with orange painted flashing and details.

  • Elbow are attached or hinged to Forearm.
  • Connecting strap attaches to Elbow sides and wraps over the arm. **Strapless is also ok.
  • Elbows are weathered and have blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Forearms.
  • Armor pieces are painted matte white with orange flashing and details.
  • Forearms have raised resin details on top and curving indented designs on sides.
    • Side with double curved indents is on the outside of forearm.
  • Forearms are seamless.
  • Forearms include attached or hinged Elbows.
  • Forearms are weathered and have blaster and/or scratch marks.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Orange details are game accurate and match arc design pattern.
  • Pattern starts at the front raised detail at the front edge and arcs along both sides to an oblong pattern underneath the forearm.
For level three certification (if applicable):

For 501st approval:
  • Black gauntlet style gloves made of leather, nylon, or other low pile fabrics. *Glove cover the wrist area.
  • Gloves must not show any labels or logos once armor is attached.
  • Gloves have imbedded armor padding along fingers and back of hand.

  • Katarn-Class Commando Handplates.
  • Handplates are painted a matte white base color with orange flashing and details.
  • Left handplate has elevated “Y” or “T” shape with edge indentation.
  • Right handplate has elevated horizontal bar on top.
  • Armor pieces are weathered and have blaster and/or scratch marks.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Left handplate orange is game accurate and covers area along the upper right at an angle from the top center to bottom right corner.
  • Right handplate orange is game accurate and covers the area along the upper left at an angle from the top center to the bottom left corner.
For level three certification (if applicable):
  • Vibroblade attachment on left hand.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Abdominal Armor.
  • Abdominal armor is painted matte white.
  • Armor is constructed with a solid cod and ab piece with 3-D surface details and a permanent belt box waist on the sides.
  • Abdominal armor may overlap Posterior armor along sides, but should be as seamless as possible.
  • Armor is weathered and may include blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Posterior Armor.
  • Posterior armor is painted matte white.
  • Armor is constructed with a solid butt and back piece with protruding rectangle and angled edge detail.
  • Permanent belt box waist aligns with Abdominal armor.
  • Posterior is weathered and may include blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando thigh armor.
  • Thighs pieces are painted matte white.
  • Armor piece is similar but with slight differences to regular clone armor with arching indent in back and raised ridge in front.
  • Thighs are seamless.
  • Right thigh may have a DC15s pistol holster that can be either permanent or removable.
  • Thighs are weathered and may include blaster and/or scratch marks.

For 501st approval:
  • Katarn-Class Commando Knees and Shins.
  • Knees and Shins are painted matte white.
  • Shins are rounded at the calf and have a flat front.
  • Knees have a rounded shield pattern with two vertical indents running from top to lower half.
  • Shins are constructed with hidden closures or seamless if possible.
    • Rear or inside leg seams are acceptable.
    • Front seam may also be overlapped with indented edge to provide appearance of seamless edge.
  • Knees are attached or hinged to top of shin and designed to look as if floating in front of the knee.
  • Angle of knee should follow alignment of front shin surface.
  • Knees and Shins are weathered and may include blaster and/or scratch marks.

RC boss shoes.jpeg Boots
For 501st approval:
  • Boots are white and are tall enough to cover the ankle to eliminate any black undersuit visible at the ankle area, while in armor.
  • Boots are lace-less and have flat soles.
  • Boots have armor detail to include a natural seam at the toe and a strap over the top of the foot with two protruding disks at each side of the strap.
  • No visible markings or labels from the shoe maker.

  • Boot sole has game accurate multi-terrain matching sole.

Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below.


Generic dc17.jpeg DC17m Interchangeable Weapon System
For 501st approval:

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DC17m weapon system may be reconfigured into a standard blaster assault rifle, a compact sniper rifle, or an anti-armor grenade launcher, depending upon the needs of the user.

  • Base weapon has bulky design similar to the in-game characteristics.
    • Has trigger handle.
    • Elongated stock located under front compartment.
    • Back angled cover with louvered design
    • Ammo clip slot on left center compartment.
    • Shield flap on left above trigger handle.
    • Multiple sights on top edge.
  • Assault Rifle attachment with short barrel and rifle ammo clip.
  • DC17m is weathered.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Blue lighted 3 digit numeric display counter.
  • Blue LED light bars on ammo clip.
  • Blue LED power on light bar on top edge.
For level three certification (if applicable):
  • Blue LED barrel light activated with trigger.
  • Game accurate sound effects.
  • Display countdown when firing coincides with diminishing ammo clip light.
DC15s Pistol.jpg DC15s Blaster Pistol
For 501st approval:

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DC15s pistol fires charged plasma bolts activated by Tibanna gas. This heavy duty blaster pistol is commonly used as a backup weapon for close-quarter combat. The energy cell keeps the blaster charged at a slow but steady rate.

  • Includes pistol grip trigger handle.
  • Extended arm bars in front of trigger that connect to back panel.
  • Center tube in barrel channel is frosted plexiglass.
For level two certification (if applicable):
  • Center tube is illuminated with constant blue LED's.
For level three certification (if applicable):
  • Blue LED barrel firing light is activated with trigger.
  • Pistol has accurate sound effects.
