The 501st approval requirements are listed in black.
The Imperial Officer Corp Detachment defines additional, optional levels of costuming excellence. In the page below, items listed in blue are optional features that will improve the quality of the costume. These items are not required, but are recommended.
For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.
For Level 3 approval, the combination of accessories for a costume must strictly match a particular movie seen configuration.

- Please note that the use of the word "should" below does not indicate that a requirement is optional. All instances of should will be replaced with must as this guide is completed.

| Required Costume Components
|
|
The following costume components must be present and appear as described below for approval .
|
|
|
| Imperial Hat, black For 501st approval:
- Fabric should be a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the pants and tunic if applicable. Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
- Base of the hat should be conical, with a crown about 4" (101.6 mm) tall.
- Front and rear "flaps" should overlap on the sides and be about 4" (101.6 mm) high.
- Front bill extends 3" down, decorated with 6 or 7 concentric stitches.
- Imperial Code Disk (see below) positioned in the center of the front vertical "flap."

For level two certification (if applicable):
- Code disk should have a notch detail on the outermost disk.
|
For level three certification (if applicable):
- Code disk should exactly match screen-used prop.
|
|
|
| Tunic, Black For 501st approval:
- Fabric should be a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the pants and hat. Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
- Tunic is double-breasted with a left over right closure on the tapered yoke.
- Yoke comes up across the shoulder to the top shoulder seam.
- The standing collar has square corners and is about 1.25" (31.8 mm) tall and closes snugly and includes a modesty panel behind closure. Collar edges are closed with two eye hooks.
- There are code cylinder pockets on both outside panels of the jacket from about half way between the top and bottom on the arm hole.
- Sleeves are long, and without decoration, cuffs or buttons, containing 2 seams, one along the bottom and one along the back.
- Tunic should be constructed with no top-stitching (stitches visible on the exterior surface of fabric)

For level two certification (if applicable):
- There is a dart of about 2" (50.8 mm) in the top center of the yoke.
- Additionally there is a seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing it along a line hidden by the uniform belt.
- The back of the tunic has princess seams that run vertically and turns outward to intersect the arm-hole seam at the vertical center.

For level three certification (if applicable):
- Tunic must be secured on the right side by snaps or buttons, not Velcro. There is no topstitching visible anywhere and it must have a lining sewn in.
- ANH officers wear a uniquely designed tunic with subtle differences that are only seen in ANH. Costumers may choose to replicate this design in lieu of the standard officer tunic, but only if doing an ANH Staff Officer.

| Code Cylinders For 501st approval:
- Between 1 to 4 per costume.
- Two styles are available. Either may be used:
- Chalk-holder/dosimeter style: silver tube with short clip, top should be colored blue
- X-Wing pilot style: machined aluminum rod with flaring disc detail at top (Admiral Motti style)

| Belt For 501st approval:
- Please refer to the Imperial Buckle reference page for information on popular eBay available buckles.
- The belt shall be constructed from a non-textured leather or a leather-like material, approximately 2" (50.8 mm) in width (up to 3" (76.s mm) is acceptable)
- The buckle shall be constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal looking material.
- A single large snap or rivet should be visible approximately 1" (25.4 mm) from the buckle. The belt may be worn with the snap to the right or left of the wearer.
- The buckle size should be approximately 2 5/8" (66.7 mm) high and 4 1/8" (104.5 mm) wide with 0.5" (12.7 mm) radius rounded corners.
- Buckles are adorned with an Imperial Code Disk at the center.

For level two certification (if applicable):
- Belt must be made of leather.
- Snap is to be worn to the left of the wearer.
- Buckles shall have a slight horizontal curve.

| Belt Boxes For 501st approval:
- Dimensions are approximately 2 1/2" (63.5 mm) by 4 1/2" (114.3 mm) by 1" (25.4 mm) thick.
- One or two boxes may be worn either vertically or horizontally on either side of the belt buckle.

For level two certification (if applicable):
- Boxes worn must match a canon source in orientation and number.
|
For level three certification (if applicable):
|

|
| Trousers, black For 501st approval:
- Fabric should be a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the tunic and hat. Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
- Pockets are acceptable, though they should not be visible with the tunic on.
- Pants must be neatly pressed or ironed, and smartly rest on the top of the shoes without bunching or giving any sloppy appearance.

| Officer Shoes For 501st approval:
- Black, non-textured, leather or leather-like material free from any visible adornment (straps, buckles, etc...)
- Officer shoes may only be worn in conjunction with straight legged trousers, not with jodhpur style pants.
- It is believed that these officers may wear black Chelsea/jodphur boots, as worn in white by the stormtroopers. This is not confirmed 100%, but would be an acceptable option.

- Shoes must be shined as would normal military dress shoes.

| Optional Accessories
|
|
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present must meet the guidelines below.
|
|
|
| Gloves For 501st approval:
- Black, leather or leather-like, enclosed fingered, non-textured, gauntlet length and fitted.
- No buckles, straps, etc.

| DH-17 Blaster For 501st approval:
- Scratch built or high-end prop replica.
|
For level two certification (if applicable):

|
| BlasTech E-11 For 501st approval:
- Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
|
For level two certification (if applicable):
- Folding stock (does not need to function).
- A real or replica ammo counter - based off of a Hengstler counter - should be present.
- D-ring mounted on the rear.
- Correct style scope.
- Two power cylinders on the magazine.
- Scratch-built, resin cast, Hyperfirm rubber cast blasters should have a total of 6 t-racks on blaster (leaving the lowest row on the Hengstler side un-covered).
- Popular commercially available toy Stormtrooper blasters have a total of 7 T-racks (if you cover all the rows of holes) or 6 T-racks (if you cover the "open row" of holes on the Hengstler side.
- Below this, you must grind off the lower T-rack and drill a new row of holes).
