What do I need to join?
You must be 18 years or older, and you must own a high-quality costume representing any of the characters listed in our character approval statement. If you are under 18, please visit the Galactic Academy, a costuming group for the younger troopers.
There are no fees and the only requirements pertain to age and costume quality. The 501st is simply a fun, all-volunteer group of fans representing characters from the Star Wars saga.

How do I get a costume?
In general, our members all make their own costumes. Star Wars costumes that are commercially available in stores or online may not be acceptable for membership! It is recommended that you contact your Garrison Membership Liaison before purchasing a retail costume to find out if it is accepted or what modifications might be required.
If you are looking to make a costume, there are two things you should do:
- Find your local garrison or outpost and get in touch. They can often help you find what you need.
- Decide what costume you would like to work on and visit the detachment site that covers the character you are interested in. The detachments are the best concentration of knowledge on their costume types that we have to offer!
Once you've settled on a costume, we recommend that you work with your GML and detachment to ensure that the costume is built to 501st standards right from the start!

I've got my costume, now what?
Prepare your photographs.
Your local Garrison Membership Liaison (GML) will need to verify your qualifications and will ask for pictures of you in your costume for validation. As part of your application, you are required to submit 5 pictures of your costume: Front, Back, Left Side, Right Side and Headshot (helmet/mask removed). The photos should be well lit and against a solid colored background. If you have any weapons in your photos, please be aware of the weapons policy.
Once you submit your photos, please work with your GML to ensure that your costume meets all requirements.
Send in your application
If your costume is done, it's time to submit your application!
All information submitted will be kept confidential and will be used only for 501st Legion registration and communication purposes, except information you designate as "public" which will be visible on your member profile page (view a sample member profile. Note: Recently-approved applicants will have their name, Legion ID number and enlistment date displayed on the 501st.com home page under "Newest Recruits" for a brief time.
You will need to select a Legion ID number (a 4-digit number which is not already in use). The 2-letter prefix will vary depending on your costume. For example, TK-421 and TB-421 would be the same member with two different costumes. Please check the list of available ID numbers before selecting your top 5 choices.

If your application is approved, you will receive confirmation via e-mail. Your Legion ID will be assigned and your record marked as "ACTIVE" in the 501st Legion member database. Please note that the 501st is an all-volunteer organization and application can take several weeks to review.
If you are not validated for membership, your local GML will work with you and provide recommendations and resources that can assist you in modifying your costume to meet Legion requirements.
Contact your fellow Garrison members, join your local 501st unit message board and register on the Legion forum so you can get out there and help bring order to the galaxy! The Legion forum is open to approved members only. There is a 24 hour delay between when your membership is approved and when you can register on the Legion board.
