The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for September 2014
by Fleetfang on Fri Nov 21, 2014 11:00 am
September saw two nominations for Legion Trooper of the Month.

Jim Cembrook, SL-7287 of Florida Garrison, headed up a Legion-wide merchandise run of police-style badges, so that our members can better keep Order in the galaxy. Handling a massive demand and mistakes from the vendor with grace under pressure, he took on a great deal of work for the benefit of all.

Our other September nominee was John Dressel, DZ-3752 of New England Garrison, who completed a large-scale set for his Garrison's convention appearances. More importantly, John helped make an aspiring member's lifelong dream come true by completing Peter Allen's TIE Fighter Pilot costume for him. Because Peter (now TI-77400) became paralyzed by ALS, he was unable to complete the costume himself, but John rose to the challenge and helped him accomplish what at one time seemed impossible. And for that, John Dressel is recognized as our 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for September, 2014.

Both Jim and John went above and beyond the call of duty and are shining examples of the generosity at the heart of Vader's Fist. Well done, troopers!

The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for August 2014
by Fleetfang on Sun Nov 02, 2014 11:19 pm
There were no less than four nominees for August's Legion Trooper of the Month! Every one of them has gone out of their way (in some cases literally!) for the benefit of their local unit and for the 501st as a whole.

This month's title went to Nicky Blum, DZ-8397 of Garrison Excelsior, for coordinating the Legion's worldwide assistance to the scavenger hunters in GISHWHES, the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, but the other nominees were also more than worthy of recognition. Gordon Gravelese, RC-5306 of New England Garrison made a cross-country trip to move the New England Garrison's full-sized Jabba The Hutt to Rancho Obi-Wan. Joseph Polselli, DS-17315 of Southern California Garrison has displayed an extraordinarily outgoing attitude to help new members feel welcome in the new world of costuming. And Rob Semos, TD-5085 of Florida Garrison, edited together more than 70 videos for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge into a single response in less than 24 hours, in answer to the challenge put to the "501st Battalion" by Star Wars Episode VII Director J.J. Abrams. (See the video here: http://bit.ly/1kQbljE)

They have all performed acts above and beyond the call of a normal trooper's duty and are all shining examples of what it means to give your time, your energy, and your heart to the 501st!

The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for July 2014
by Fleetfang on Wed Oct 22, 2014 3:55 am
We had three nominees for Legion Trooper of the Month for July 2014, and each of them has gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Andrew Kudryavtsev, TK-25007 of the Russian Outpost was nominated for designing and building a professional-grade, Death Star-style booth display for his outpost. Tamara Bos, DS-8230 of the Dutch Garrison was recognized for conceiving and constructing an ewok target range as a fundraiser for her garrison.
But it was new member Adam Hehnen, RC-21130 of Midsouth Garrison, who received the nod as the Legion's July 2014 Trooper of the Month. Adam has jumped into trooping with both feet, and in the process he helped a young man with a disability to build his own Republic Commando, leading him to open up to the world in a whole new way.
Congratulations to all of our July nominees! You have all set shining examples of what it means to be proud members of the Fighting 501st!

In Memoriam: Scott Smith TI-42167
by Fleetfang on Mon Oct 06, 2014 10:09 pm

Scott "Cajunwolfe" Smith, IC-42167 of the 501st Legion’s Bast Alpha Garrison, passed away on the 5th of October, 2014. His costuming interests spanned membership in several communities including the 501st Legion, Starfleet/USS Avenger, and the Rebel Legion. Scott’s genuine smile, eagerness to help others, and the general joy that followed him at events illustrates how good things can come in small packages.

It is with great pride that we now enter Scott’s name into the 501st’s Hall of Eternal Legionnaires.

501st Mission Spotlight: Induction of TI-77400
by Fleetfang on Sat Sep 27, 2014 6:36 am

What started out as a simple request to have someone recognized as an honorary member of the New England Garrison quickly evolved into something much greater. Two months ago the NEG received an email from a social worker with Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. She told the story of Peter Allen, a lifelong Star Wars fan in her care that has ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). After spending more time with Peter and learning more about him, she discovered that he had been working towards joining the 501st Legion, building a TIE Pilot costume, but as time went on and his condition worsened he was unable to finish his work on it.

After hearing Peter's story, members of the NEG would not settle for just making him an honorary member of their garrison. They made a decision to secure Peter's unfinished costume and complete it for him so that he could finally, and officially, join our ranks...
