501st Mission Spotlight: Induction of TI-77400
by Fleetfang on Sat Sep 27, 2014 6:36 am

What started out as a simple request to have someone recognized as an honorary member of the New England Garrison quickly evolved into something much greater. Two months ago the NEG received an email from a social worker with Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. She told the story of Peter Allen, a lifelong Star Wars fan in her care that has ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). After spending more time with Peter and learning more about him, she discovered that he had been working towards joining the 501st Legion, building a TIE Pilot costume, but as time went on and his condition worsened he was unable to finish his work on it.

After hearing Peter's story, members of the NEG would not settle for just making him an honorary member of their garrison. They made a decision to secure Peter's unfinished costume and complete it for him so that he could finally, and officially, join our ranks...

The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for June 2014
by Fleetfang on Sat Sep 27, 2014 6:16 am
In June, we had two Legion Trooper of the Month nominees: Thomas Gardner of Carolina Garrison and Jody McQuarters of the Midwest Garrison.
Both troopers have been instrumental in long-term planning for major events within their units. It's this kind of behind-the-scenes construction and organization that enables their fellow members to show up and have a great time! We thank both Tom and Jody for all of their service to their fellow troopers, and we send our congratulations to Tom, who officially took the honor for June 2014's 501st Legion Trooper of the Month!

The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for May 2014
by Fleetfang on Sat Sep 27, 2014 6:15 am
The 501st had no less than six nominees in May for Legion Trooper of the Month! Showing the great breadth of the Legion's good influence across the world, the runner-up nominees were: Fabrizio Prosperi, TR-5055, of Belgium: FanWars Garrison; Jay D. Ritchie, TK-10138, of Midsouth Garrison; Ruben Raspeño Muela, TK-3657, of Spanish Garrison; Christian Burgos Hernández, CC-9539, of Puerto Rico Garrison; and Ian MacPherson, TI-1873, of UK Garrison. The honor ultimately went to TX-86421, Kenny "Hairspray" Lim of the Singapore Garrison, for his off-duty effort to save the life of a fellow human being who was in pain, preventing a would-be suicide. We tip our buckets and raise our glasses to toast all of the May nominees!

In Memoriam: Barbara Pallor TI-1729)
by Fleetfang on Tue Sep 23, 2014 5:01 am

Barbara “Bärbel” Pallor (TI-1729) of the 501st Legion’s Austrian Garrison, passed away on the 17th of September, 2014. Formerly a member of the German Garrison, Barbara was very active in both the Star Wars and Star Trek costuming communities. Her infectious humor always added welcome levity to trooping events. Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Ulli Pallor (TK-429), and daughter Constanze.

We all will miss her, but she will continue living on our hearts. It is with great pride that we now enter Barbara's name into the 501st’s Hall of Eternal Legionnaires.

The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for April 2014 is...
by Fleetfang on Fri Sep 12, 2014 9:48 pm
April had two great nominees for Legion Trooper of the Month, both of whom have lent their time and skill toward helping new members complete their costumes and achieve their dreams of joining the Fighting 501st: Brian Robinson, TK-2918 of Garrison Tyranus and Edwin Gay, CC-5707 of Midsouth Garrison.
In the Legion Council vote, Brian, who has traveled all across the state of Virginia in order to meet with aspiring new recruits and help them build their costumes, only barely edged ahead of Edwin to take the title. But we are honored to be in the company of both of these upstanding examples of "Troopers Helping Troopers!"
Well done, gentlemen, the Legion is in your debt!

The 501st Legion Trooper of the Month for March 2014 is...
by Fleetfang on Fri Sep 12, 2014 5:36 pm
...Stew Salyer, TK-8814 of the Midsouth Garrison!
Stew went above and beyond the call of duty in March by heading up a new "Disco Blast-a-Trooper" project for the MSG. Stew purchased all the equipment for the set, built it in his own time and transported from his home to Lexington, KY for the Lexington Toy and Comic Convention. He selflessly manned the booth and directed operations for three days to earn nearly $3,000 in donations for the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital! Well done, trooper!
Juan "Ivar" Xicoy, TI-20276 of the Spanish Garrison was also nominated in March, for his willingness to help out his local unit whenever and however he can.
Congratulations to both Stew and Ivar! Keep on troopin'!
